[Testo disponibile solo in inglese] Borderlands is an interactive video installation by Kombo Chapfika. Borderlands was part of the Digital Imaginaries: Premonition show at Wits Art Museum, in Johannesburg South Africa from July 23 to September 25, 2018.
Borderlands digitally re-creates auditory and visual hallucinations recalled from taking Iboga, the dried root of a central African tree which has been used in many ceremonies for centuries by the Gabonese Bwiti tribe (the fastest growing indigenous religion in Africa). These first hand hallucinatory visions included a net comprised of the bodies of benevolent ancestors holding on to each others limbs, reaching down from the sky to pull the recently dead out of the violent waters beneath. A sea of words, initially clear dialogues with loved ones and deceased ancestors, rising in quantity and speed until they become incomprehensible individually.
